Trauma Informed Care & Discipline

We all need discipline in our lives to function well in society. For youth especially, boundaries and consistency help provide safety and security. How does a caregiver or professional provide that understanding to a child, and then possibly consequences for inappropriate behavior, who is not attached to the foster family and has significant trauma in their lives? This training discusses this topic with ideas and tips, as well as an overview of why children with traumatic history can be so challenging! Training content in part developed from National Child Traumatic Stress Network.

Sexual Health in Foster Care

This training examines reproductive and sexual health in relationship to Child Welfare System children. Foster and older adopted youth often have higher rates of risky sexual behavior, negative sexual health outcomes & sexual exploitation. They often become sexually active earlier than their peers, without being emotionally or physically ready to deal with the potential challenges this can create. This training will help participants better understand the physical health needs of youth with a background of trauma and how they can help meet these needs.

Attachment: Beyond Infancy

Attachment is the foundation of all relationships, and when caring for children with a history of trauma and trust issues, it does not always occur easily. Lack of bonding is often a core reason why caretakers and children have challenges in placement and/or disrupt from the home. This training addresses the need for Attachment-Focused care, including some practical tips on how to strengthen connections to children. This training can help caregivers and professionals understand the basics of how attachment issues are extremely common in children who have experienced complex trauma, and what behaviors may come from that history.
