Trauma 101
Description:
What is trauma? The training answers this question by defining various levels of trauma, how trauma affects children, and what caregivers and professionals can do to assist youth. The presentation will heighten the helper’s awareness of children’s cues so they will know what to expect and how to respond when a child experiences trauma triggers.

Cultural Care
Description:
This training explains the importance of cultural differences when caring for a child of a different race or culture. It provides insight on how the caregiver can recognize different values, beliefs, behaviors, communication variations and potential barriers, including personal care. Additionally, this training addresses the need to keep children connected to their culture of origin.

Working with Birth Family
Description:
The relationship between foster parents and birth family can play a key role in successful reunification, or aid in a more successful adoption process. It is critical that caregivers and professionals understand the need for the birth family connection when possible. This training will focus on building communication skills and also enhance the participants’ understanding of the impact of trauma on parenting, and the grief and loss of all parties involved.

Coping with Holiday Stress
Description:
All of us can feel stressed around the holidays. This stress can be amplified by feelings of grief and loss for youth in foster care, kinship and early adoption. This training will help participants identify holiday stress that children in new homes feel, create a healthy environment for the holidays, and how to help youth, caregivers & professionals cope.

Trauma Informed Care: Building a Safe Place
Description:
Physical safety is not the same as psychological safety. For a child with a history of trauma, trust and comfort in the home can take time to build and requires more than just locked doors. This training will help caregivers and professionals understand the difference, and learn some practical suggestions on how to help youth feel a sense of control and safety in their environment. Training material developed by National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN).

Sexual Health in Foster Care
Description:
Sexual Health in Foster Care examines reproductive and sexual health in relationship to the foster care system. Foster and older adopted youth often have higher rates of risky sexual behavior, negative sexual outcomes & higher rates of sexual exploitation, and can become sexually active earlier than their peers. This training will help participants better understand the sexual health needs of youth with a background of trauma and how they can help meet these needs.

Description:
A virtual support group intended for adoptive, foster and kinship caregivers. A place to share concerns, resources and meet others who understand! Does not matter what placing agency you used, or are with currently.

Resiliency
Description:
This Resiliency Training provides information on how to foster resilience in children. This training looks at factors that affect resilience, the human adaptive process, ways to successfully cope with trauma, and the 12 steps of successful survivors. The training ends with a discussion around how caregivers can help their children feel safe, capable and loveable.
